This summer was a first for students all over the country as GCSEs, with the new 9-1 grades, were rolled out in most subjects. And for us, it was another first, as Archer Academy students sat GCSE exams for the first time. Our students certainly rose to the challenge securing excellent results across the board. In a year with such uncertainty over the changes in GCSE grades and the increase in academic expectations we are even more impressed by the performance of our students.

40% of all grades were achieved at Grade 7-9 (or equivalent A-A*), and 77% of all grades were at Grades 9-4 (or equivalent A*-C). 44 Archer Academy students achieved at least one grade 9/A* and 140 grades, overall were secured at 9/A*. The familiar benchmark figure of the number of students achieving 5 or more GCSEs, including English and Maths, is 74% at Grade 4 and above and represents excellent achievement across the cohort.

Even more impressive is the 33% of students (1/3 of the cohort) secured both English and Maths at Grade 7 or above. Furthermore, we are delighted that 58% of our students secured the English Baccalaureate at Grade 4+ and 46% at Grade 5+. The English Baccalaureate (students who have secured GCSEs in English Language, English Literature, Maths, Science, Foreign Language, History/Geography) provides such an essential foundation for future academic study and admission to Russell Group Universities.

Whilst performance across the board is excellent it is important to mark out a range of exceptional achievement for example in Art (47% students achieved Grade 9), Chemistry (73% Grade 7-9), Physics (73% Grade 7-9) and Biology (81% Grade 7-9). Furthermore, in Italian 100% of students secured an A/A*.

It is also wonderful to highlight the true advantage of our Archer Plus curriculum, where students study additional qualifications through enrichment time as it has enabled our budding Mathematicians to complete GCSEs in Further Maths (66% of them securing A/A*/A** and 100% at C+) and Statistics (100% at C+ and 50% at Grade B to A*).

We are thrilled by these excellent grades and the significant achievement of our students who have exceeded their personal goals and the targets set by the school. Our provisional Progress 8 score looks set to be impressive and significantly above national averages, further highlighting the impact of teaching at the Archer Academy compared to national expectations.

Our pioneer students have worked exceptionally hard, with a huge amount of help and encouragement from their families. Our fantastic team of teachers have done everything they can to support them academically, as well as inspiring them to give it their all, keeping them going and helping them stay calm throughout.

We are delighted that the vast majority of our students have secured their first choice of 6th form courses and this will see most transition to Woodhouse College for A Level study; with many others moving onto Barnet and Southgate College. Other destinations include: Dame Alice Owen, Henrietta Barnett, City of London, Highgate and, exceptionally, Kings College Maths School. The significance of our strategic partnership with Woodhouse College has secured a smooth progression for so many of our students, they are very lucky to move on to such an outstanding learning environment.

Headteacher Miss Harrison said: ‘I could not have asked for more from my staff and students, and they thoroughly deserve their success today. We look forward to supporting them in their next steps to 6th form and beyond. I am so very proud of our pioneer year group – well done.’

Among the many outstanding individual performances are those of our 8 students: Krishna Gaglani, Hannah Gellman, Zaynah Khan, Angelica Levy-Ephraums, Shumona Nath, Isabelle Siegal, Sama Soliman and Lucas Watson, who all achieved Grades 8-9 in all subjects.
